Any time you visit a website or even download a file you request data from the internet, such called "Traffic" or "Data Volume". And some internet service provider may limit you to a specified size. In germany this is the case for mobile internet (3G, HSDPA, ...). Here you have the full speed until you reach a monthly traffic of (for example) 5GB, after that the speed of the internet connection is strongly limited. Other provider may disconnect you after that limit or even requires you to pay a lot of money for the following traffic.
As you see, sometimes it is required to have a look at the already used traffic. And even without those needs you may be interested how many data you upload and download from the internet. Then WinNicSat is the right application for you!
With WinNicStat you can easily see how many traffic you have used this day / this month already. Also you can generate nice charts to see when the most traffic was sent / received.
How it works
WinNicStat is seperated into 2 "Applications", a Windows Service and a client application.
The Windows Service must be installed on the system first. It's purpose is to get the traffic values from each network interface and store it in a data file. This service is always running in background, which is required to get as accurate values as possible.
The client application is for user interaction. Here you can see how many data volume you used today and this month and generate a chart with these values.
What you need to know
If you use internet connection sharing (ICS) WinNicStat should run on that machine that is sharing the internet connection. Otherwise you will get the traffic from that computer only.
Also, like with any other traffic monitoring application, you need to know the traffic value may be varying a bit against that measured by the provider. Some provider may round the traffic value if you disconnect, and I have also seen a provider that uses the size of a file even you haven't completely downloaded it. But this shouldn't be a problem with the most providers. Anyway you shouldn't try to reach the 100% of your limit exactly, just to be safe.
Neither the administrators nor the developer of WinNicStat are responsible if you need to pay any extra fee or similar!
